Interview with Germán Málaga Rodríguez MD, Internal medicine doctor and Hospital Cayetano Heredia researcher, Head professor of the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia, Founder Médicos Solidarios Perú

During the interview doctor Málaga informed us about last donation of 5 devices to the Regional Hospital Honorio Delgado – Covid Hospital in Arequipa, Perú. The name of the device is Wayrachi, this is an oxygen flow regulator that generate a high flow of oxygen through a ventilator mask providing support to the patient avoiding extra effort at breathing.

Doctor Málaga explained the ventilator mask provides a low flow of oxygen from 10 to 15 liters, while Wayrachi device delivers a high flow until 120 liters of oxygen. Professionally, doctors can use 60 liters per minute in patients, triggering a positive pressure in the respiratory system, opening the lungs for an oxygen exchange, in that way the patient does not need to make extra effort at breathing.

This process is very common in patients with respiratory insufficiency; currently the noninvasive mechanical ventilation is not enough for critical patients with COVID, for this reason doctors have just 2 options:

  • Patient needs to be sedated and to goes early under invasive ventilation.
  • The option no to use an invasive mechanical ventilator, cause a serious damage in the body due to the lack of oxygen, with fatally consequences.

These high flow devices - Wayrachis - are a very important tool that allows, in these severe cases, to give enough time to the body for recovering, lowers inflammation, without lowering oxygen levels, and the patient does not need to struggle at breathing. The great benefit is to avoid the patient goes under invasive mechanical ventilation.

The donation of Wayrachis makes the Covid Hospital of Arequipa, can have better management of patients in ICU, avoiding early mechanical ventilation, and saving lives.

Finally, the doctor recommended prevention is important, the appropriate use of masks, frequent hand washing, and social distance, showing responsibility to family and society.

The goal is to improve the medical assistance to our people; we can do it with union and action, we can because all is in our hands!
